Oil fields are usually covered with various structures and equipment such as drilling rigs, pump jacks and pipes. Furnaces and stacks for burning off excess natural gas may also be seen if the gas cannot be used for other purposes. A big infrastructure is vital for extracting crude oil from oil fields. Oil fields are frequently located in hard to reach areas. Therefore the people who work there needs to be provided with proper housing, equipment, electricity and water. This often proves to be a costly and complicated undertaking.
Kashagan, a huge oil field in the Caspian Sea, sent its first crude for export after about 16 years in development and more than $50 billion of investments.
The venture loaded 26,500 metric tons of crude for export into the country’s pipelines, Kazakhstan’s Energy Ministry said in an e-mailed statement Friday. Of that, 7,700 tons was send to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. Reaching stable production will take “some time” as commission work continues both offshore and onshore, the ministry said.
Kashagan oil field was first put into operation in 2013, but just a month later, production was suspended because of a gas leak. An examination revealed that the whole 200-km stretch of pipelines set to transport oil and gas from Kashagan needed to be replaced because of micro-cracks, the result of high-sulfur associated gas running through them. Commercial-scale production resumed in October 2016 at a rate of 90,000 bpd, at the project which has cost US$50 billion to develop so far.
At the end of last year, the in commission company said that it had obtained the approval of Kazakhstan’s government to begin early engineering and design work for further expansion of Phase 1 production at Kashagan. Once the project is completed, it could increase Phase 1 production capacity to a target level of 450,000 bpd.
Oil production at the Kashagan field, the recoverable reserves of which quantity to approximately 9-13 billion barrels of oil, was launched in the fall of 2016. Before that, the start of production at the field was postponed several times.
